Ever gone to the doctor’s feeling so tired but nothing can be found in the lab tests? You probably need to cleanse your system to rid your body of heavy metals. We are constantly exposed to these metals due to our daily habits in addition to some which we cannot control.
What they are and how we get exposed:
These include mercury, thallium, cadmium, arsenic, aluminium, nickel, and a few more. For some of us, we got exposed at childhood just a few moments after birth. The presence of heavy metals such as mercury in vaccines for various diseases such as measles have been cited in several research articles. Dental amalgam fillings have also been found to contain levels of inorganic mercury. Aluminium can be found in most anti-perspirant/deodorant sticks made by popular brands. Other heavy metals are found in fertilizers, pesticides, and fungicides which are often used as farm inputs on some of the foods we consume regularly. Some sources come from unsuspecting foods such as fish. Some large saltwater fish, such as tuna, swordfish, shark, marlin, sea bass and halibut contain mercury. Freshwater fish such as pike, walleye, large-mouth bass and white croaker also contain high amounts of mercury. Intake of these fish should be minimized or entirely avoided.
Symptoms of heavy metal exposure:
- Brain fog and problems with focusing
- Chronic fatigue
- Neurological disorders
- Autoimmune disease
- Depression, Bi-Polar, and Anxiety
- ADD and ADHD
How to test for heavy metals
Ever heard of dead men tell tales? Arsenic has been found in the hairs of victims of poisoning; many years post-mortem. The easiest way to detect heavy metal exposure is through hair analysis. This is because hair permanently binds heavy metals in levels proportionate to those found in the body. Urine analysis can also be conducted once a chelation (adding something to bind the metals) treatment has been conducted. This treatment pushes the metals into the kidneys which are then excreted through the urine. It is advisable to only visit a doctor who has received proper training in chelation therapy. Fecal analysis is also recommended for children and people who have weak kidneys.
Natural heavy metal detox agents
Chlorella: Chlorella is a super-food that binds dioxin and other environmental toxins; It serves as a mild-chelation agent. Studies have shown that chlorella can be very effective in flushing out toxins from the intestinal wall, muscles, brain, ligaments, bone, and connective tissue. You can consume it in the form of supplements or you can add the powder to your food. It also improves the levels of the body’s master anti-oxidant, glutathione. Chlorella combined with Cilantro have been lauded as being effective oral-chelation agents.
Cilantro: Cilantro is considered an immune booster and a super-herb. It has been widely listed as one of the effective herbs to use for heavy metal detox. Research has shown that cilantro changes the electric charge on intracellular deposits of heavy metals to a neutral state, this relaxes their (heavy metal) tight bond to body tissue therefore releasing them to be flushed from the body. Research has shown that levels of mercury, lead, and aluminium in the urine increase significantly after consuming large amounts of cilantro -this is the point where with sufficient consumption of water, the metals can be flushed out through the urine. Add cilantro to your salads, smoothies and make it a habit to consume this herb daily.
Barley grass: This highly nutritious grass has the capability to draw heavy metals from the intestinal system, pancreas, reproductive system, spleen, and thyroid. Drink 1-2 teaspoons mixed with a glass of water, half teaspoon of turmeric, and lemon/lime juice from a whole fruit.
Garlic and onions: Sulfur which is found in these bulbs do help the liver in detoxifying itself.
Water: It not only helps with hydrating the body but also helps flush out the metallic toxins from the body.
