The basic definition of pilau is cooked rice in seasoned broth; you can also add chicken or red meat to this dish. There are many reasons why you should try cooking Turmeric beef pilau; it is healthy, yummy and best of all, guilt-free!

Ingredients

  • What you need
  • 2 cups of rice
  • 1 bulb traditional garlic (crushed)
  • 1 red chilli chopped
  • 1 kg lean beef (cubed)
  • Cooking oil (preferably Rice Bran oil)
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp pilau masala (Nature’s Own or Orley's brands if in Kenya)
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp Himalayan/sea salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 2 large onions (white because of flavor)

Instructions

  1. Chop the beef into cubes and boil until tender (*keep the stock*)
  2. Pour cooking oil into a separate pot
  3. Add sugar
  4. Add sliced onions and fry till slightly nearly brown
  5. Add the beef and garlic and slightly stir fry with the onions for 3 minutes
  6. Add some pilau masala to allow the beef to adopt the spice
  7. Add raw rice to the pan and stir to mix both ingredients
  8. Add pilau masala, turmeric, tomato paste and salt (in one minute intervals)
  9. Add 5 cups of water mixed with broth left from boiling the meat
  10. Again sprinkle 1/2 tsp of pilau masala, and bring to a quick boil for 5 minutes
  11. Reduce the heat and add a teaspoon of oil, as this prevents rice from sticking
  12. Serve and garnish with kachumbari/salsa salad
